Phyllis Trowbridge was born and raised on Long Island, N.Y. and moved to Portland, OR in 1992. Since 2004, she has resided in Ashland, located in the Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon. Ashland provides Phyllis with a rich and quiet environment in which to live and paint. Within a few hours drive is a great diversity of landscapes to work in, including coastal redwoods, high desert, the Siskiyou and Cascade mountain ranges and many beautiful creeks, rivers and lakes. Phyllis is currently represented by Mark Woolley Gallery in Portland. Since moving to Oregon, she has participated in numerous regional invitational and juried shows, including Painting Portland at the Art Gym at Marylhurst University, Art About Agriculture through Oregon State University and the Oregon Biennial at the Portland Art Museum. She has pursued painting residencies at Dorland Mountain Arts Colony, Red Cinder Creativity Center and the Vermont Studio Center. Phyllis’ work is represented in the collections of Gamblin Artists’ Oil Colors, Portland Community College, and the E.R. Jackman Foundation of Oregon State University. After graduating with a B.A. from Hamilton College in New York State in 1987, Phyllis went on to receive her M.F.A. in painting from American University in Washington, D.C. in 1990. Her undergraduate degree included a semester of art studies in Lacoste, France. Since 1996, Phyllis has taught painting and drawing workshops at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, Portland Community College, Oregon College of Art & Craft, and Pacific Northwest College of Art.
